UBATUBA

To the west, the beautiful Serra do Mar mountain range. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean. From north to south, a beautiful coastline.
The Municipality of Ubatuba
Ubatuba is a city located in the North Coast region of the state of São Paulo. It is bordered to the north by the city of Paraty, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and to the south by Caraguatatuba. Ubatuba is a unique place, situated between the Serra do Mar mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, in a narrow strip of land about 15 km wide and 62 km long. What makes Ubatuba special is its coastline full of curves and bays, where more than 100 beaches are found, including islands. In some stretches, the Serra do Mar almost reaches the ocean, as in the Serra do Mar State Park, at Praia da Fazenda, near Praia de Picinguaba.
Ubatuba has many beaches that are still practically untouched, thanks to the fact that 83% of its territory is part of the Serra do Mar State Park, where the Atlantic Forest is preserved.

Besides the beaches, the municipality is also rich in waterfalls, some located at the base of the mountain range, such as the Água Branca Waterfall, others on the edge of the highway and close to the sea, such as the Escada Waterfall. Some waterfalls, however, can only be visited with a guide due to difficult access and because they are located within the park.

The City of Ubatuba
The city is still small, with approximately 97,000 inhabitants (IBGE, 2025). Its beaches give their names to several neighborhoods. The city center has some historical buildings, most notably the Fundart mansion. In the same area is the Municipal Fish Market, on Fishermen's Island, an excellent place to visit. The city has many bike paths, and some beaches and tourist attractions are easily accessible by bicycle, even for those in the central region (between Praia Grande and Perequê Açu).
Leaving Praia Grande, you can visit other busy beaches with kiosks, such as Praia do Tenório, as well as usually quieter beaches like Praia Vermelha do Centro and Praia do Cedrinho (the latter accessible via a dirt road with hills and a short downhill trail). A very interesting bike ride, starting from Hotel Coquille, is to go to Caisão, along its winding paved road. From there you have a beautiful view of Ubatuba Bay.
Praia Grande is the most popular beach in the city and is very busy during the summer and holidays. Our hotel is located here, at the end of a dead-end street in a quieter area, 250m from the sea. At the left end of the beach, Canto do Baguari, are the highest waves and where surfers gather. The entire beach is urbanized with a boardwalk and kiosks.
Leaving Praia Grande and heading towards the city center, at Praia do Itaguá you'll find many restaurants and bars. There you'll find the Ubatuba Aquarium and the Tamar Project, great options for post-beach outings. It has a beautiful waterfront with a boardwalk excellent for walking and sports! Right after the Aquarium there's a very nice tourist center with shops and places to eat, excellent for an evening stroll.
North of the city, there are fewer neighborhoods and more secluded, deserted beaches. Itamambuca is the closest beach with some tourist infrastructure. Beyond it, small settlements and fishing villages appear, such as Ubatumirim and Picinguaba. Inside the park, Praia da Fazenda is completely deserted and of rare beauty.
The city's potential for ecotourism and sports tourism is becoming increasingly clear. Birdwatching is one of the activities that attracts attention in the city. Ubatuba has also been the stage for trail running and triathlon competitions, as well as SUP and swimming events.
Where is Ubatuba located?
