The Beaches of Ubatuba
Praia Grande
Easy access bordering the BR 101 highway, at kilometer 54.
With its white sand and strong waves, this beach is one of the most popular and sought-after in Ubatuba. Our hotel is located here. The beach has infrastructure including restrooms, kiosks, parking, and a lifeguard station.
The left side of the beach, known as Canto do Baguari, is a favorite among surfers and is also the busiest (and has a wider stretch of sand). From the left side, you can access Tenório and Vermelhinha beaches.
The right side is a little less crowded. There, going up a trail that runs alongside the highway, you can reach the Praia Grande viewpoint, a spot with a beautiful view of Praia Grande itself and also Praia das Toninhas.
Did you know? (1) Praia Grande has its own sewage treatment plant, maintained by the residents' association. Clean waters and sand, on 1,800m of beach with a wide strip of sand. (2) It was in the waters of this beach that great names in Brazilian surfing were born, such as Ricardo Toledo and Tadeu Pereira. (3) From the Mirante viewpoint there is a trail that descends to Praia das Toninhas.
Tenório Beach
To the left of Praia Grande
Located between Praia Grande and Praia Vermelha do Centro, 2km from Hotel Coquille, it has a tree-lined shoreline and some kiosks. It is inside the Tenório Condominium - pedestrian access is free, but cars must be left before the gatehouse.
Toninhas Beach
To the right of Praia Grande
Beautiful, extensive beach frequented by families. It is easily accessible from the BR101 highway, and also by trail from the Praia Grande viewpoint, via a short downhill walk.
Enseada Beach
Beautiful beach 5km from Hotel Coquille
It's located at the very beginning of the southern region of Ubatuba, 4.5 km from the Hotel Coquille. One of the most traditional beaches in Ubatuba, Enseada beach is home to several restaurants.
With a length of 1600 m, compact sands and calm sea resembling an immense swimming pool. Suitable for children, sailing, skiing and windsurfing. Access via Km 58.3 of the SP-055 highway.
Little Red
After Tenório Beach, 2.4 km from Hotel Coquille
Vermelhinha is a beach with a steep drop-off, meaning it has an abrupt drop-off in the sand as soon as you enter the water. This is due to the characteristics of the strong waves that form there and the bottom currents. It is not a beach to take children to.
That said, know that it is a beach of rare beauty and is very popular with surfers. It is about 700m long, has soft sand on its flat part and is sloped in the area closest to the sea, so it is not so good for walking.
Cedro Beach
Accessible by trail, on the way to Ponta Grossa.
Cedro Beach is 4.5 km from Hotel Coquille, just past Vermelinha Beach, on the way to Ponta Grossa.
The route can be taken by car, along a winding road with ups and downs. Some sections are paved, others are dirt.
The final stretch, however, must be done on foot. There's a trail downhill, a bit steep, but the effort is well worth it!
Itaguá Beach
In the Itaguá neighborhood, just before the city center.
It is located 2.5 km from the Hotel Coquille. Along the waterfront, you can enjoy excellent restaurants serving all types of cuisine, with a focus on fish and seafood, as well as a variety of restaurants, kiosks, and shops.
It is not recommended for swimming in the sea, but it offers a wide boardwalk for pleasant walks, bike rides or jogging while enjoying magnificent views.
Perequê Açu
Urban and easily accessible.
Perequê Açu Beach is 6 km from the Coquille Hotel. Still in the central region, it's located just past the city center for those heading north. It's adjacent to Ressaca Beach, on its left side, where the Indaiá River flows into the sea, featuring a beautiful winding formation and sandbanks.
It is a developed beach, with parking in front and kiosks. It is located in the neighborhood of the same name.
Perequê Açu in Tupi-Guarani means "Big Beach" (Pereque = Beach, Açu = Big).
Almada Beach
North of Ubatuba, 44km from Coquille.
To reach this beach, you must head north towards Paraty. Leaving the BR 101 highway, there's a winding and narrow paved road that offers beautiful views of Engenho and Ubatumirim beaches.
On the way there or back, stop at Mirante da Chica, where there's a restaurant. It's worth it for the view and the food. In Almada you'll find kiosks and parking – you can spend the day there. From there you can easily access Praia do Engenho.
Engenho Beach
Beautiful beach next to Almada Beach.
On the left side of Almada Beach there is an easy paved access. Going up there, between a restaurant and some houses, you reach Engenho Beach. With calm waters, it's a great option for a swim.
Some other famous beaches:
Sununga Beach
South of Ubatuba, 10km from Coquille.
Just past Saco da Ribeira, it's easily accessible, being on the left side of Praia do Lázaro. There you'll find the Gruta que Chora (Weeping Cave), a curious formation, beautiful for photos, whose walls are always shedding water (hence the name).
It has strong waves, especially on days with rough seas, which provide a visual spectacle. The waves crash against its rocky wall on the right and return, forming cross waves.
It's a steep beach, dangerous because it gets deep very quickly. It's not a beach for beginner swimmers.
Itamambuca
Internationally famous
Itamambuca is located in the northern part of the municipality, 19.5 km from the Coquille Hotel. The beach boasts well-preserved natural surroundings, with loose, white sand and coastal vegetation.
It is famous for its excellent waves for surfing (it is considered one of the main surfing spots in Brazil, hosting several national and international championships).
The Itamambuca River flows into it on its right side.
